Nine Heart Attack Symptoms

At one time in your life, you’ve surely been anxious or scared enough to say, “I think I’m having a heart attack.” The question is, would you really know if you were having a heart attack? Some heart attacks are sudden and intense, but most start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort.

There are nine symptoms that could signal you are having a heart attack. If you begin to experience these symptoms, seek help immediately. Put your health first. Don’t ignore the signs, they could save your life.


Chest pain or discomfort

Chest pain that comes and goes and returns

Pain in shoulder, arm, back, neck, jaw or stomach

Lightheadedness or fainting

Sweating

Fatigue

Shortness of breath*

Nausea or vomiting*

Pain in back or jaw*

*More common for women than men

Not all people who have heart attacks experience the same symptoms or to the same degree. If you think you are having a heart attack, call 9-1-1 immediately for an ambulance to take you to the hospital. Do not try to drive yourself.
