Neurology

Is my condition neurological?

Sometimes it is not easy to tell if a condition is caused by something wrong with the brain. One example is a movement disorder like epilepsy. Then there are diseases like Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s that our neurologists are trained to treat.

The best way you can identify your condition is to visit a physician, who can refer you to a neurologist if necessary.

Other neurological conditions are:

  • Brain and spinal cord tumors
  • Headache
  • Muscle disorders and pain
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Neuritis
  • Stroke

If my condition is neurological, what kind of tests will I have to undergo?

You will undergo tests of your brain and spine such as a computer tomography scan, better known as a CT or CAT scan, or an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). You may even receive a Deep Brain Simulation. Read about Deep Brain Simulation.

How might my neurological condition be treated?

You should first understand that neurology can overlap with other branches of medicine. For instance, if you have a brain tumor, you will receive treatment that combines the science of neurology and oncology. An emerging treatment in neurology is called Gamma Knife radiosurgery, and it focuses a beam of rays through the skull to the tumor without the use of cutting.
